Designing our New Bedroom

We moved into our new place in November and I’m only just getting around to thinking about our bedroom! Peggy’s room and my office were first up as I needed them both to be done for client styling jobs, but now they’re finished I can crack on with our bedroom design at last.

I’m really influenced by my surroundings and as our flat is a period property with lots of Victorian features I didn’t want to fight that and only go for our usual Mid Century design. Instead I’ll be blending that with a some global inspired pieces and a few vintage elements too.

The Plan

Here is a little mock up of the bed area, sadly our bed isn’t that stylish but this gives a good idea of how I’d like to decorate that side of the room. For the colour palette I’d like to go for soft natural linen, a bit of rust and desaturated blue. I’m hoping to achieve a slightly worn in look which I think with soften the Mid-Century style chest of drawers I’m planning to buy.

Like I mentioned earlier we are lucky enough to live in a really lovely Victorian top floor flat. I’m pretty sure it was the servants quarters but the rooms still have a lot of period features. We have an amazing dark grey marble fireplace and decorative cornicing. Our old flat was a new build so I’m used to blank box like rooms!

The new elements I’d like to bring in are some items that really speak to my Summer & Autumn seasonal style (read more all about that stuff here). The blue mudcloth cushion and basket hung on the wall are both from one of my favourite shops called Yonder. I think they’ll add a bohemian / rustic touch.

The Bedroom Right Now

As you can see the room has a calming atmosphere and some lovely period features, the perfect blank canvas for a whole new look. For now I have no plans to paint the walls, that may change in the future though. The main elements that need sorting are a wardrobe, chest of drawers / vanity area and the bed area of the room. I may add a shelf somewhere but I think I’ll wait to live in the room a bit longer to see if we need that.

We’ve opted for the Pax wardrobe with Flisberget doors and we popped into IKEA the other day to have that custom designed to suit our needs. I’d love to source a Mid-Century chest of drawers and style it up a little like a vanity area with a mirror, I can at least pretend I have time to put make up on (Peggy does not leave much room for that!).

The Inspiration

Above you can see the mood board I put together, I think it looks really calming and cohesive so I hope I can pull it all off! I’ve never had to completely re-decorate such a large bedroom before so I’m a little nervous. However, I’m so excited to introduce more desaturated colours. I’m loving that slightly beachy look which I don’t think would have really worked in our tiny London flat. There’s something about having a bit more space (inside and outside the home) that inspires me and being so near the coast and countryside means that I’m able to bring that feeling into our bedroom without it looking too contrived.

Did that make any sense? What I’m trying to say is that our new life in the North East is really inspiring my interior design choices. I guess being away from such a huge buzzing city like London does change your whole lifestyle. It’s amazing how your home can reflect your life so effortlessly.

I’m itching to get going on this project so hopefully over the next few months I’ll be able to make some big changes! I’ll keep you posted on Instagram and I’ll be doing a full bedroom tour on my blog once it’s complete. Have a lovely day!
