An Online Christmas - Concerts, Performances and Activities for all the Family

Instead of feeling sad that I’m missing out on certain Christmas activities and thinking about all the people I can’t see, I’ve decided to throw myself into a digital Christmas this year. It’s been a year like no other and we all have a choice to feel down or make the most of it. No matter how you’re spending the festive season there’s still a lot of opportunities to bring joy into your home with these online concerts, plays, and parties.

There are so many wonderful Christmas shows to enjoy online this year

The Nutcracker Ballet

As a proud North Easterner I am so glad the Sage is hosting loads of festive concerts. I’ve bought tickets for their online Christmas House Party on the 12th, tickets for this cost £5 but they have free events too. They're organising loads of fun concerts, sing-alongs, and special musical Christmas quizzes so do have a look at their website.

Fancy a bit of history? The Tudor House Christmas Experience will guide you through Christmas past. Where do Christmas presents come from? How did Henry VIII celebrate Christmas? What was Christmas like for children during WWII? To find out, join the Tudor House for games, stories, art, and discovery in this creative family session aimed at children aged 6 to 12.

The Scottish Ballet's special Christmas film The Secret Theatre, on Monday 21st December, is streaming online for free. Can’t wait for this one, it looks beautiful.

An Interactive play called Humbug. This online theatrical adventure looks so fun. You’re invited to the Ministry of Make-Believe to solve a Christmas mystery and save the day. The tickets give the whole household access to 7 episodes of the online adventure. This is accompanied by an interactive Fact File filled with 13 artifacts sent directly to your home!

The Royal Opera Christmas Concert, December 18th. Following the livestream, a film of the concert will be available to watch online until 17 Jan. The ballet of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland will also stream from 1st of Jan. Tickets for the concert are £8 and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is free to watch.

Gotta love CBeebies! The Christmas show this year is called Christmas in Storyland which will be available to watch on Saturday 12 December on the CBeebies channel and BBC iPlayer for free. Lots of CBeebies Christmas specials have been listed on their Instagram as well.

The Little Angel Theatre is hosting lots of online shows and activities, some are free, some are £13.50 per household. Peggy might be a bit young for the puppet shows but they look incredible. Puss-cat’s First Christmas from 16 December and Mother Christmas From 4 December are free on their YouTube.

Borrowing festive books. I’ll be using the click and collect service for our library so I can borrow lots of fun festive books to read to Peggy. Really looking forward to this as we can get cosy in the dark afternoons with some hot chocs!

Children’s Classic Concerts and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra  bring you their night before Christmas concert.  It’s going to be packed with festive family favourites to sing along to. Catch the premiere at 2pm on Saturday 12th of December on their Youtube channel.

Finally - If you fancy learning something new why not explore the science of the season with Glasgow Science Centre? The Christmas Extravaganza is on 11th of December 2020, at 7pm. It’s free but donations are very welcome.

I really hope you’ll support one or more of these wonderful cultural organisations this year. Lets have fun if nothing else! Join me over on Instagram for lots more festive joy in the form of simple craft ideas and decorating.
